Cool Are transmissions getting TOO many gears?

8 Speed Transmissions? Really? Do we really need these damn things?

Even a 6 Speed m/t can be a bit much. But 8 speed auto's?

GAh!!

I think 6 is plenty for both, maybe even 5 for autos. Seems like 6-speed autos are just constantly shifting.

8 would drive me absolutely batty and would be a factor against buying a certain car.

My truck still has a 4-speed

I'm fine with however many ratios they can cram into an auto box. Let the people who don't give a shit about driving save the world with gas mileage and good emissions. It'd be pretty tough to fit that many gears into a manual box though.

Then again, when every car is all-electric in a few years, we won't even need transmissions!

Oh the horror!!!

If the electronics/software can manage it, I don't see why it wouldn't be. Cars are already crammed with a bunch of useless sh!t (you probably call them "features" ) you don't need, at least an extra gear can benefit the performance, fuel economy and drivability of the car. With dual clutch transmissions it's pretty seamless anyway.

Why is 5 better than 4? Why is 6 better than 5? Why is 7 better than 6?

So what, what about CTV? More gears make only sense with an automatic. But CTV keeps the car pretty much always in its most optimal RPM range for power and/or fuel economy.
