Here are my five:

1. Veyron's W16 quad turbo - No contest.

2. Alfa's Multi-Air - http://www.alfaromeo.com/cgi-bin/pbr...Air_Technology

3. GT3 RS 3.8L - no explanation required.

4. 2.0L S2000 engine (as found in the Atom) - 120 hp/L, 9K rpms, endless reliability.

5. Ferrari 458 Italia's 4.5L V8 - 125 hp/L in an NA V8 @ 9K rpms??? YES.

I agree with the Cadillac, MB and Ferrari mentions. I had that Ferrari engine in it's least tuned state in my Maserati and holy crap, that thing was maniacal. The flywheel weighed about as much as my pinky toe.

I'll throw the VW 1.4L twin-charger (supercharged and turbocharged) in there as well...

A 6.2l engine making 556 hp isn't crazy, it's under achieving.
