My parents just called me up and told me they were getting one of these: Bose Wave Music System.

I told them there is almost always something better than Bose for less money, but I'm not knowledgeable about these compact systems. They were thinking a requirement would be multi-cd capability, but I reminded them an iPod dock would make a lot more sense. So, any recs for a nice compact system with an iPod dock that needs to fill about a 30x20 room for under $500?

I have a Cambridge Soundworks unit. This one but the older model without the ipod dock:

Honestly I think it's pretty comparable to the Bose unit. It doesn't take high volumes well as the woofer has a bit of a buzz now after trying to use it to listen to tunes while in the shower.

 

I'm surprised I'm even saying this, but the Bose Wave is probably one of the only products that Bose makes that's actually good. I haven't heard any compact type unit that really blows it away. Their noise reduction headphones aren't bad either. Everything else is just marketing magic.

 

^Well, the Bose Wave may be nice, but I definitely love the Bose system that is standard in P-cars.

 

This will embarrass the Bose Wave all day every day.

I have the B&W Zepplin as well, and it's honestly more show than go. It does look great in the family room though, and always gets compliments.
