Hardly a waste. I take it you aren't a hardcore gamer. There is a large demand for machines like these. The video game market is enormous and growing. Games like Call of Duty are outselling many mainstream movies, and I won't even being to guess how many copies of WoW have been sold. The people that buy a machine like this are those who would be found lugging their desktops to LAN parties. A laptop obviously makes this much easier.
It's awesome to have the power of a desktop with the portability of a notebook. I have a 15lb laptop from Sager, which has a desktop quad core processor, dual video cards in SLI and 3 hard drives in Raid 5. I wouldn't trade the convenience of taking that much computing power on the go for anything. If I am traveling far, I'll take a smaller machine along, but I can't think of many scenarios where a 10+lbs machine would be a big deal for a grown man to carry.

I used to game on PCs, but mainly PS3 now. I get the gaming argument, but beyond the "hardcore" gaming community I can't see the niche demand warranting the R&D budget for monsters like these. They obviously sell tho.
