Add in balanced cables and for 1500$ you will have something that will blow your mind and do much much better on reproduction then a speaker set in the same cost with weak front end.

yes they are, there us more esoteric stuff out there but I think these are the best. I would put these 1K headphones up against 10K speakers any day of the week.

 

So do you basically just plug in the amp and connect your ipod and you're good to go? Does listening to music purchased on itunes through an ipod significantly compromise the sound quality?

It can, depends on the encoding quality. I personally use a Grado sr325is right out of my computer at work. Now I can tell the difference between a Computer-DAC-Tube_headphone combo and it bugs me sometimes, but for some its not that huge a difference.

Find somebody local who sells Grado's or Sinns, bring a CD and give it a listen. I did and no longer have the monster "prodigy" martin logan's in my living room.
