Dude don't be a snob, you can get a decent stereo or surround setup for $3k, and Best Buy is probably just about the worst place to shop. True, $2-3k is barely enough to cover cables for a true audiophile, but that doesn't mean decent sound can't be had with $3k.

If you have a $3k budget total, and don't plan on getting anything else for many years, and want a full surround setup, you won't be getting anything close to "audiophile" gear. But, if you're willing to start with the basics and go from there, you could get something like the Ascend Sierras, a used amp + processor (or even just a decent receiver for now), and be done.

I was running an Aperion 6.1 setup (which I got used) with a Rotel 1056 receiver and Rotel 1045 DVD/CD player with Tara Labs cables before (probably $3500 total), and frankly for the listening space I would have been hard pressed to be much happier. If the room set up isn't ideal, spending over $3k would be silly anyway.

Since you don't have an ideal room and want surround, I'd suggest going with something from Aperion or Mirage. If you get to the point where you don't need surround, and truly want an audiophile stereo setup, start getting some used gear with separates. For music only, you can start with a decent set of used monitors (sans sub), a decent used amp, and a decent CD transport (but $3k won't get you very far).

Point is, mid-fi components will get you 90% of the way there with any of the respected direct-order manufacturers.

Another option is to start off small and grow the collection over time. Buy a set of great bookshelfs and a reasonable stereo receiver. Over time you can add a center channel and a surround processor, better amps, then get floor-standing fronts and move the bookshelfs to the rear, then add a sub, upgrade the cables, etc.

^ whats with the pillows? impressive systems...
gfro, how long does a high end speaker and electronic component sound at its best, i.e. how much play will start to affect the speaker/sound integrity etc. and at these prices, does the company refurbishes the tower for free?

Only thing that might wear out on speakers is the foam or rubber surrounds on the individual speakers. That degradation could take 10-30 years! Never had to do this to any speakers I have owned.

Electrolytic caps in some electronics may need to be replaced after 15-30 years.
Tubes in some systems require replacements over time.

Free refurbishment?
Uh - no, name any company selling anything that will refurbish their products for free.
