I believe the carbon brakes work best when they are red hot, so containing the heat is a good thing in that case.

That is correct, plus they really don't ever fade. Then again, they can overheat and essentially melt the pads at which point, you're screwed. But at that point, we're talking about going into corners at F1 speeds and regularly braking from 200+ mph down to 70-80 mph every 30 seconds or so for several hours at a time.
