Need help of gurus about the gas octane numbers :)

Hi, need help in understanding one thing

im in moscow, so we have following gas octane numbers 80, 92, 95 , 98 and only UNLEADED

so , what gasoline should be used for carburetor engines for cars like 1965 Mustang or 1969 Chevelle SS , cuz i heard that these engines are made for LEADED gas and with extremely low octane number like 70 or so

Thnx

Depends on if the Engine and Carb has been rebuilt. Lead was used in older fuels, mainly to act as a lubricant. so if they've both been rebuilt you have no worries using unleaded fuel. If they haven't, you can get a lead additive that will do the job the leaded fuel did; but you're better off rebuilding the Engine/Carb.

Hope this helps.

Muscle car engines with their higher compression ratios require higher octanes (don't put 70 octane in a Chevelle SS). Tetra-ethyl lead was used to increase the octane number, and leaded gas is still used in race fuel to this day.
