If you're going to ride a bike or run with it, you should get one with the "third leg", that kind of triangulates it over your shoulder and locks it into position, so it doesn't fall around you.

I know you've already answered your own question, but in terms of messenger bags for future reference the hands down, best two options on the market IMO are Chrome and Mission Workshop.
