What I meant is that people like to view Porsche as the makers of only the Porsche 911. When the Boxster was introduced, Porschephiles hated it. When the Cayenne was introduced they hated that too. When the Cayman was introduced it was a 911 wannabe. Now with the Panamera, same story. They'll learn to accept it though because Porsche's success is based on cars like these. Yes the Asstek is fugly!

So, to summarize, Porsche sacrificed form for function. The car drives great, and will out-drive its competitors all day long. The interior is great. The exterior is mixed. The front is badass, but about halfway down the car, it just becomes ugly and bulbous, and doesn't let up on that. The aesthetics are personal, of course, but, like Brock Lesnar, while the majority of people agree that it has presence, not many people would use the words 'beautiful', 'stunning', or 'gorgeous' to describe it.
I think the Panamera would look great as a Coupe (i.e. modern 928), but also I think it could work as a wagon (i.e. Audi Avant competitor) if done right. That would allow you to maintain the roof height and leg room for the second row that mandate such hideous compromises in the sedan version.

I'm with you, and there is a little of that. I was in gradeschool drawing pictures of the 911, it *IS* porsche. I was never a fan of things like the 914, 944, etc...
With that said, I'm not a porsche luddite, I like the Cayman as it stays in the spirit of a sports car company. The Cayenne is a really nice SUV, maybe the best one out there for urban driving. Its just hard to swallow as a porsche.
Anyway, the panamera really is ok in my book after getting past that. I'd still like to see them work on the exterior styling though.

At least Porsche isn't diluting their brand like Aston Martin and Lotus. They're creating cars, and they're not even trying to stick to their philosophy at all.
Porsche however, has never compromised sportiness on any model they've built.
The Panamera is a beautiful, low, long, wide, and short sports car. Looking at it from the front, it looks very aggressive and very Porsche. From the side, you can appreciate how low and sporty it is. Especially for a four door. From the rear you can understand how slippery the aerodynamics are, and you are assured that this is a sports car. Take a look through the sporty wheels, and you are greeted by huge brake calipers. Step inside, and you know it's a Porsche... Instantly.
The Panamera couldn't be more Porsche than well... Porsche. The Panamera is a Porsche sports car with an extra set of doors. As is the Cayenne.
And a fact: The Panamera was the most eagerly anticipated Porsche in history. It was well worth the wait, and I'm surprised at how sporty it is.
Also, as 20C4S said, the Panamera has so much road presence. I'd say just as much as a 911.

Porsche has always been about dynamic superiority, and building the kind of cars that the more you drive them, the more you love them. There are just so many little things in the CTT that just make sense, and you feel as though every aspect of how the car works was thought through in that precise, German way.
There's a quote, that I think was attributed to Ferry Porsche, to the effect that the goal of Porsche was to produce a "superior form of transportation". That sums it up for me. It's not necessarily about being the fastest (even though they're undoubtedly quick), just about being the best. In that sense, the CTT delivers. I'm sure that in every *other* way, so does the Panamera, but it's still butt-ass-ugly, and that's unacceptable at this price point.
