Horrifying Panamera Prices
#41
That's what people used to say before the launch of the Cayenne too.
When the Panamera V6 eventually comes out, it is going to steal too much sales from Mercedes, BMW and Audi.
If I'm shopping for a performance sedan and don't need 5 seats, Panamera S and Turbo will be very high on the short list. Its performance is going to overshadow its inadequate look.

I believe it cost Porsche a lot of money to produce because unlike the Cayenne chassis, it is not shared with 2 other vehicles.
Too bad.

And look at resale values, particularly the Turbo versions. Porsche routinely overprices the range-topper, and unless it's truly special, original owners will take a bath on resale. Apparently even the GT3RS isn't special enough, given the prices we see for low mileage versions, and I'll wager a GT3RS will capture your heart more than a PTT.
As for performance, in this segment, accelerative performance overshadows other aspects of driving performance. I bought an M5 over an E55 AMG for the same reasons you think people will buy the Panamera. I like to drive round corners, I value steering feedback, good braking is a joy, and although the M5 is great in those regards, it's still a 4,100 lb sedan (so, lighter than a PTT), and it's always a bit disappointing. What I find myself doing more often is standing on the gas pedal, and exploiting its linear speed. If the PTT isn't quicker than the competition in a straight line (and I don't think it will be, except at low speeds - too heavy, AWD robs power), the other stuff just doesn't matter as much as, for example, when you're weighing Corvette vs. 911.
Besides, it's *so* ugly, even more so than the Pepperwagen.

PMac,
I agree with most of your opinion.
No cars are holding any good resale value now. We are paying for a depreciative toy. If Porsche is bad, look at any current Ferrari, Lambo, AM, BMW, Mercedes...
Can't compare the panamera with the 911 or corvette either. It is a 4 door sedan.
Any GT3 will capture my heart more than any Cayenne or Panamera. You're right on! But people buy Cayenne and Panamera as their daily fast transportation, not as track or sport car.
If compare to Mercedes AMG or BMW M5 or M6, I predict that the Panamera Turbo will be ahead in performance. It will be stupid for Porsche to not exceed their competitors after spending so much time and money to launch a new model.
And yes, I agreed that its rear end is ugly. Too bad for drivers that are following, not the owner...

As you can tell from my signature, i don't own anywhere near the caliber of car the rest of you do, and maybe i'm completely off base here, but i've always thought that people (like you guys) who are buying/leasing/whatever $80k+ cars really aren't too concerned with depreciation.
Like you said, they're all "depreciative toys" and just like children's toys, we get them because even if they aren't economical, practical, or beneficial in very many ways, they provide us with a special type of enjoyment in a way that few other things can.

For those that want a real sexy 4 door you should consider the Fisker Karma. Sexy is very lacking in the Panamera.
Now this is a four door done right. BTW, if your daily commute is 50 miles or less a day you would never have to pour gas again! Even if you drive a lot you will average 100mpg.
