just taking a guess here...but she is most likely out of my budget

An Alpine HU will probably give you the best sound (at least in the realm of navigation headunits), but the Pioneers generally have more/nicer features at a better price.

Personally I have a Pioneer headunit, and I like it quite a bit. If and when I get a navigation headunit I'll be buying a Pioneer again.
