Dana,

Could this "friend" wait a year or two (you know, maybe until he's 16 ) and get a used 987.2 (09 and after) car? Even if not, the new one should depress prices of the pre-facelift car.

The pricing disparity between these two is minimal

Cayman:
07 + cert mid-high 30s
08 + cert low 40s.

I am basing this off of excellent condition.
cstroked, dead on about the cert costs, although $2500 is really the minimum, as that is just what it costs to do the CPO inspection and get the warranty. anything else that would have to be done to meet cert guidelines would have to be accounted for (like N spec tires), that would not normally be an issue on a non CPO car.

Does the difference in cost of buying a CPO car only evidence the extra effort that the dealer had to do to certify it (and the expected costs of the extended warranty), or could you reasonably expect to be getting a better car than a non-CPO car?

Yessir! Agreed. Anything that doesn't meet the reqs and needs replacement is an additional cost.

There's a lot to CPO. The inspection is ridiculous. Can't have been in an accident, no paintwork (I believe) then you have the inspection which is very detailed. Basically you're paying for a warranty twice as great mileage wise and 1.5x as long time wise at max value.

Will the car be better? That's going to depend on that car. It's just with the CPO you don't have to worry about something blowing up 4 years from the in service date or 50,001 miles and not being covered. The smartest thing a Porsche buyer could do, in my opinion, is buy a CPO car. That is assuming the buyer does not prefer to have an exact set of options on the car.

Once people really understand CPO it's going to make it hard to sell new cars if there are 1-2yr old low mileage cars available to the buyer that fit the bill.

Specifics on coverage here:
Porsche Approved - Pre-owned Vehicles - Home - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG

No car that is sold by a non-factory authorized Porsche dealer can be certified and it must be certified by the dealer prior to the sale. So if a certified car is sold to a broker, and resold, or to a another non-Porsche dealer, the certification is void.

Ha! I thought the same thing when I wrote this post.

I started out legitimately looking for a 360 on behalf of a friend of mine - who has since bought a 2005 F430. During that process I got the bug and bought the car I had scouted for him!

This is the same situation but I am not interested in a Cayman. Although I think the Cayman is a great car, it would be hard for me to drop to less than 400 bhp.

I have test driven the Cayman S and there is a lot to like. But not enough brute power or noise for me.

Supercharged Cayman would be fun though. No point in adding one to your garage though in any shape or form.

I saw a Rosso Scud. 599 tonight - STUNNING.
