Bentley Mulsanne vs Rolls Royce Ghost - Design
#32
Mulsanne for me please, I remembered the first time I saw it, my heart sank! it is amazing in person. Phantom is too big to be driven daily, and the ghost doesn't cut it for me, Every time I look at the side mirrors, it puts me off cuz it's so big.

The Ghost if one of the most beautiful sedans ever, no doubt my favorite over the Mulsanne. Rolls Royce has managed to create a style on its own. Their cars are masterpiece of design simplicity which respects tradition making them timeless at the same time that fashionable. This is elegance on wheels, well if anything as ostentatious can ever be elegant.
As a fan of Bentley, the Mulsanne design has been a great disappointment to me. I really love the return to the two single front lamps and the distinctive rear wings, which I am sure any connoisseur will appreciate it. But the implement of those ideas doesn´t work well with this boring, obvious shape. The front is a mess, the A pillar too curved and the back is pure snobbism. At the end I have a sensation of missed opportunity.
Rolls Royce took the hard way and succeed, the Ghost is so distinctive that you do not mistake a Ghost with any other brand than RR. Bentley instead has not been able to create a shape distinctive enough on the metal. Put a Brilliance emblem on it, and it could be mistaken by a Chinese effort to enter the top premium market.
The poll says that Bentley wins. Ok, but I bet that those people who prefer this Bentley over the Rolls are those who also like Lexus school of design.

I'm glad they have moved away from that.

I spent a lot of time in these cars today trying to find a replacement for our maybach 57 which we have had since new and now has over 165k miles.
In summary the muslane feels very dated, is big but little space inside. The windows are also very small making the whole experience very dark and tight. Waiting list 4 months.
The phantom is ugly as hell and a brute in life. Forgot this. Inside its hard to get in as the seats are tucked inside the suicide doors. You sort of have to tuck, step in and swivel. Dads 87 and its a bit tough for him. He also hates the image, not him at all. Inside the rear seats are higher than the front seats so you can see out the front window above the passenger. A nice touch but your head always feels very close to the ceiling. It's not that nice in there and feels rather dated now.
The lwb phantom same as above just with a bit more legroom and ****ing massive! Proportions look odd too.
The ghost. Lovely new tech, nicer inside than phantom, less presence and more handsome. Most handsome of the lot IMHO. Issue is too small on the inside.
The lwb - closest to perfect of all of them. Loads of room, great tech, handsome and good value as a bonus compared to the rest. Take price out of it really is the best car. Off tomorrow to spec and negotiate. 4 months wait.
That brings us back to the maybach. What it offers really is a marmite experience and its now out of date. His has over 165k miles in 7 years and its served its time very well. If there was a new ne of these I'm sure it would have been the one for him to go for. Fact of the matter is they sold less cars in all the years they made it than rolls now do in a year. It's reputed each car cost merc a loss of over £500k. Never the less to be in the back, as a tool nothing competed in its day. This ghost lwb is not the same but a very good car.
