Rans acrobatic pilot loses wing, saved by ballistic chute

I'll take one new wing, and a new set of shorts please.

What a great idea for an aerobatic plane! During my training days during aerobatics we were told if we had a problem like that, it was headsets, harness, handle, and bail. But, that's easier said than done when you're deep in a spin and completely out of control.

Better idea to give the airplane the chute instead of the pilot! Very cool.

Cost and weight. Several GA manufacturers do include them now though as standard equipment, and many offer them as options.

Huh. That's also a very lucky deployment. It's even money a ballistic chute would become fouled with the plane itself when in an aggressive roll like that. Looks like this one deployed from the tail.

Most manufacturers are beginning to offer the option now, and some come standard.

That was an amazing video though. I have never seen a ballistic parachute system on one of those planes before. i would definitely want that system in my plane if I was doing aerobatics.

Ballistic Recovery System, Inc is one of the market leaders in this field. Check them out Hernando. They're the ones that Cirrus uses.
They have 172 and 182 chutes as well as others for light/sport aircrafts and they can give you the system to install on an experimental one.

Note: On their website they say the system has saved over 250 lives. That's a remarkable product IMO if it's accomplished that.
