I hate to say this; but its better his eye, then killing a house full of people.
He's learned a hard lesson; but now his choice has been made for him. He should be grounded.

It really depends on the accident. For me it makes the guy more experienced, therefore I am more comfortable with him. Pilot's are always learning, and a mishap can happen to anyone, even the best pilot. We all learn from others accidents, and we will almost all face some sort of emergency situation. Once we have been through a problem like that, we will know what not to do and be even more prepared. I can almost guarantee you that you have flown with many airline pilots that have had incidents before.
After all, if you run in the woods long enough you will eventually trip on a log.

The seatbelts up front aren't meant in the same regard as seatbelts in your car are. They aren't "crash" devices, however, more "restraint" devices.
Crash devices are to save your life/reduce injury in a crash. Restraint devices (seat belt and shoulder harness), are meant to keep the pilot in the seat and able to perform his duties and functions. For example, severe turbulance. They aren't intended for crashing, but for making sure you can maintain control of the aircraft in turbulance, wake vorticies, and any other unusual and sudden aircraft attitudes.
