Who needs ground effect? Or a positive rate of climb?

Did I just watch him raise the gear before he even left the ground?

Possibly, or just after but before having sufficient lift to stay off in ground effect. It is a popular high performance take off manuever where the jet is feet off the runway, gear coming up, then a max performance climb.

What a lot of (un-smart) guys do, is select the gear lever to the UP position on the ground during the takeoff roll. With weight on the wheels, the squat switch prevents gear retraction. As weight comes off the wheels (takeoff), the gear retracts "automatically" because of the switch position.

Works great most of the time, unless you're that Mig pilot. lol

Gobbles that Blue Angels video was great. Time to start saving up for a military fighter that's found its way onto the civilian market!
