That's the first thing that comes to my mind. I remember him doing an interview bragging about how intelligent of a purchase it was, because for the price of a new Hawker he got a 727. He obviously didn't take into account the operating expenses that thing requires.

Yeah, 727 is an interesting bird anyway. It had some irregular stall characteristics because of the high tail design and engine through-placement. Great plane obviously, but you would want your pilot to be well-versed. And yeah, operating costs would be a bitch . . .

He's probably dumping it as the maintenance costs have gotten to the point where it makes sense. He certainly seems to have gotten his use out of it assuming it was always used as a private aircraft.

I know I'd rather sport around in a big bird than an exec jet.

I wonder if cost per hour savings by purchasing a newer plane would've already paid for itself.

10,000 hours of flight time in his plane @ $10k/hr = $100 million dollars.

10,000 hours of flight time in a plane at say, $3,500/hr = $35 million dollars.

41,833 Total Hours
29,664 Total Landings

This data seems odd.... must have been a bunch of short flights?

When you look at it like that I guess it could make sense. Figuring that a BBJ is around 60-70 million.
