My Uncle was in the Navy for 27 years. He was the head of NAVAIR for a few years. I got to see some incredible things when I would go visit him. He was heavily involved with the development of the F/A 18 E/F as well as the joint strike fighter. Still to this day I have seen nothing cooler than an F/A18 launch off a steam catapult over the Chesapeake Bay.
Through visiting him I got to sit on the tarmac and watch the Blue Angels practice and listen to the pilot's conversations. Also, he would drop me off for hours in the full motion simulators and I got to attempt to fly things in a simulator like VX-22 Osprey's (The X means it was still experimental at the time) and Seaking helicopters. By far the greatest video game ever.
The coolest thing I ever got to do though was at Pax River there was a HUGE airshow ever two years. One time one of those rocket cars came and the driver asked my uncle if he wanted to ride. He said no but asked if I could go instead. The driver said as long as I wore a flight suit it was fine. I am about 14 at the time and I am walking around in flight suit with two stars on the shoulder walking into a rocket car. Talk about every teenage boys dream.
My favorite plane of all times though is still the AC-130 Spectre. Fo all of you that have played Call of Duty 4 it is the plane in that game. It is said to be "the closest man has ever come to imitating the fist of God"
