Jaguar SUV edges closer to production | Autocar

Q-type and XQ names have been trademarked

The much-anticipated Jaguar SUV project has advanced another step after the company lodged the registration of 'Q-type' and 'XQ' as trademarks with the EU. These fit in with Jaguar's current naming strategies, as seen on the F-type and XF.

An SUV is a significant priority for Jaguar, as it bids to expand its production and challenge rivals including BMW and Audi. While Jaguar sales have been rising, its first quarter figures were just a fifth of Land Rover's. This disparity is set to grow, too, as Land Rover's aggressive expansion plans kick in.

A recent interview with JLR's global product marketing director, Steven de Ploey, suggested Jaguar will produce a compact SUV rather than a larger model. This would give it a rival to the Audi Q3 and Q5 as well as the BMW X3.

However, rather than using the platform of the Range Rover Evoque, Jaguar's SUV is expected to be underpinned by a new small car architecture that could also form the basis of its small saloon.

A turbocharged petrol and pair of diesel engines are likely to be taken from the Range Rover though, and the engine line-up could potentially be further bolstered by more powerful units and a hybrid option. Jaguar's supercharged 3.0-litre V6, as seen in the XF, XJ and F-type, could also feature.
