I was watching the local news a few nights back and they reported this.

Apple is replacing all iPod Nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 due to a battery overheating issue.

I checked my "old" iPods and found that I have three of these units. They all checked out and Apple is sending me a return box.

All you have to do is enter the serial number on their site and then log in.

Once Apple receives the retuned Nanos, they will send back new ones!

Maybe I live under a rock, but this would never have come to my attention if not for seeing that news story.

I figure many of us have old iPods laying around. Check them out. You may be entitled to a replacement.

That's a good question. It sounds like they will be replacing them with the same - 1st generation - Nano.

But they will be brand new and I assume with all of the accessories, etc.

 

Thanks for the heads up Dana, I have a couple of these sitting around at home too.

 

I believe they're replacing them with the new nano, as it's cost prohibitive to replace all the batteries in the affected units, and it's not like they have a stock of new 1st gen nanos laying around.

So, my guess is the replacement will be a refurb new nano, though I haven't heard anything to support that yet.

Guess I'll find out in about six weeks.

You almost certainly will not get any accessories with it, though. Exchange programs are traditionally for the unit affected only.
