Will Time Machine restore my program files?

I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and my hard drive is about full, so I bought a new 500gb 7200 internal HD. I currently have an external HD that I use to back up my computer using Time Machine. If I back-up my computer using TM and then pull the current HD and replace it and restore with TM will I have everything back including program files?

Or do I need to clone my current HD using special software etc?

I believe it will. I did a Time Machine restore on my new laptop with the data from my old laptop and it basically mirrored whatever was on there.

Yes. Boot the machine with the install DVD once the new drive is installed, then: Utilities -> Time Machine -> Restore.
