Apple to Revolutionize Cell Phone Service with New SIM Card?

Great read... How to Bypass Carriers Apple-Style: Tech News «

This could be great for consumers. It would drive prices down by eliminating long cell phone contracts and increasing competition between the cell phone service providers.

That said, if this is what Apple plans to do, the major cell phone providers will be fighting this tooth and nail.

I think I understand what the article is saying.

But when I was typing out what my understanding was, I don't think I had a clue.

Can someone summarize it?

Apple is taking over the world....end of story.

It will allow people to buy data service from different carriers from apple.

It could mean cheaper data costs.

Well no not exactly, they have a extremely limited market share when you consider implementing tech for something on this size. Plus every cell network in the world would blackball them. Then there is the problem with even getting a global IMSI implemented. Its just some Apple fan typing out his dream implementation without any regard for reality.

When has anything made by Apple ever been a cheaper alternative?

and yet 10 years ago, who would have thought that apple would have a larger market cap than Microsoft. If anybody can get this done its apple.

from the article....

It could sell competitive roaming deals to its customers. International roaming is horribly expensive for telephony and even more so for data. If Apple would connect with these networks directly, the networks wouldn’t know whether or not the customer was from France, the UK, or Zimbabwe. All it would see is an Apple IMSI. The first six digits would direct the device to Apple, which could then offer its customer a data roaming deal at prices as low as local rates.

I have a tough time believing that this will happen. This seems to be a case of, if it seems to good to be true, it probably is. These new SIM cards could lower the price of phone plans by creating competition, get rid of long term cell phone contracts, and allow everyone access to affordable, pay as you go, cell data connections anywhere in the world. Naturally, the carriers are not happy and will not surrender control of the industry that easily.

The battle is now underway... Apple Sim Soap Opera to Play out on M2M and Smart Grid

According to The Telegraph, a UK-based publication, carriers aren’t happy with the prospect of losing their direct customer relationships by way of embedded SIMs; some have reportedly threatened to cease phone subsidies to Apple if the handset maker continues its desire for embedded SIM cards.
We've seen this before, the technology generation coming to change an extremely profitable business that has been operating under the same business model for years.
