So, Apple sucks.
As some of you know, all of the applications/data on my iPad was deleted when I upgraded to iOS5 yesterday. When I plugged it in, it said it was backing up the data, finished that and then moved on to the rest of the upgrade process. After everything, I finish up and unplug my iPad to find that everything is gone -- including documents which I've put HOURS into -- and there is no backup present in iTunes. I go to call Apple customer support, go through providing my serial number, name, all other info to a recording, and eventually I get told that I should call back during business hours.
Today I call again, go through the same process as yesterday, and after everything says "to speak to a technical specialist, you will either need to purchase Apple Care for $79 or pay a one time fee of $39." Needless to say I hung up.
I've looked all over the internet for a solution, and took it in to Best Buy (where I bought it) and asked what they thought I could do -- they basically said that lots of other people have come in with the same/similar problem, but that there's no solution, and Apple hasn't told them how to deal with it.
I'm not usually an Apple person, but after all the great testimonials from people about the quality of their product, the care they put into their work and the ease of use of it all, I bought my iPad. Now, immediately following a HUGE update they don't even have phone service available? ALL of the manufacturers of other electronics I own (phone, PC, printer, Xbox) provide 24/7 phone support, why is it that Apple doesn't?
If any of you have a way to fix this, I would really appreciate you letting me know. I don't care about the rest of my apps/music/videos, just the documents. I'm also curious about why so many of you adore Apple as you do when they have such poor customer service and organization.

I would almost be willing to put money on you not doing something incorrectly.
Whenever I am updating something, even if apple will do it for me in the process, I will always back it up myself to a different location. It's not rocket science.
It sucks that you lost your shit though, but are you positive it's not somewhere on your computer? Maybe PM simba, he might be able to point you to some secret compartment.

Yeah, I'll try that. I was going to back it up, but it said that it was doing it/did it, so I thought it was fine, especially considering Apple's pristine reputation. It's definitely not visible in iTunes, but who knows?

When you say it;s not visible in iTunes? When isn't it visible? The backup file? If you hold down "option" and press the restore button, do the back-ups get displayed? Or when you go "preferences" then "devices"?
These are my back-ups.
These are my back-ups.
