iTunes/OS help

I had an album that a friend gave me and the songs were in the wrong order. I put them in order outside of iTunes and dragged them back in but they still go to the incorrect order. I had already deleted them from iTunes and their folder that iTunes makes for the songs.

Is their a way to change the track number on the file. I'm not referring to simply renaming it because that isn't helping when I put it into iTunes.

Add the songs to iTunes. Select first song, right click, select get info and a window should pop with the metadata. There is an option where you can change the track number for example 1 of xx. Next song you can make it 2 of xx and so on. You can make the songs on any order you want.
