I'd say wait. Let your contract go month to month. Sign up for Verizon next summer when the iPhone 5 is likely coming and get it for the new customer price. Your phone will still be worth money, so the change should be cheap/free.

FWIW I just did this. I was gonna e-bay my 4, they're going in the $250ish range there. I threw it up on facebook first and a friend bought it for $275 shipped. So I made $25 on my upgrade after taxes/fees for AT&T.

Just sold my 32gb iPhone 4 for $350 on craigslist. Upgraded to a 64gb 4S a few weeks ago.

I think all you need to do is a restore on iTunes to wipe out the content on the phone. Is there something else that should be done?

That will do it. You can also go to Settings - General - Reset
