Apple iPad Patent Could Beat Them All
#2
Because almost all modern patent systems do not work for technology.
What's worse is how sleazy tech companies have become. Instead of making better products, many seem hellbent on establishing a monopoly and impeding any competition. Microsoft doesn't do well unless they are the only one in the market, Apple seems to think they are doing the world a favor by existing, and Google wants to control every application (and all of your information) to better feed you ads.

Simple fact of the matter is that Apple, like any real tech company, invests billions of dollars in R&D, and protects that investment with patents. Without it, they would not realize anything like the return necessary to justify said investment, as their designed would be knocked off almost immediately.
As it is, Apple more or less shapes the computing world so far as stylistic and user interface design goes-- look at any given PC laptop, they have all tracked and lagged Apple by a few years for over a decade.
If you think that patent is vague, look up a few held by IBM and Intel on processor and semiconductor design.
