This is not new and the information is not being sent to Apple. It is just stored on your phone/home computer.

"Apple" isn't tracking anything. The phone is keeping a log of coordinates which are synced to your computer. Apple never sees said log.

If you're especially paranoid, turn on encrypted backups in your iTunes settings and/or turn off location services on the phone.
