If VLC is still in the Appstore you can install that on your iPad and just drag any videos onto the iPad through iTunes.

Edit: just read that the VLC app has been removed as I think it wasn't actually VLC themselves who had uploaded it. I hope it appears again, but if you downloaded before you can still use it
Damn, wish I had known it was there in the app store.
