so let me get this straight... I finally get a corei5/i7 and switching between intel video and the nvidia gpu... all for over 3k? No blueray? HDMI? higher screen res? LED backlit?

Its a solid computer, but cmon... you guys gotta look at the updates and laugh a little at how high they are pricing these notebooks. You get dribbles of new tech so that you are always buying the latest edition.

SoCal is an unknown quantity at this point
Now that I think about it, I might keep what I have... Or sell it and get one with my government discount.

Firstly, you get a battery that should last around 8-9 hours which is very impressive for that kind of size. Also the new unibodies are very nice and feels extremely rigid although that is a more subjective opinion. Nevertheless, such a design probably makes it last longer i.e. less chance of dust getting inside etc.

To answer the HDMI question:
"The Mini DisplayPort delivers a pure digital connection to external displays — even large 30-inch displays — quickly and easily. It gives you plug-and-play performance with the Apple LED Cinema Display and supports VGA and DVI, as well as the latest multimedia standards such as DisplayPort and HDMI."

To answer the two last questions of yours.:
"Every MacBook Pro has a pristine LED-backlit display with wide-angle viewing and a color gamut usually seen only on a desktop display. So whether you’re watching a movie or making one, you’ve got the perfect canvas. The ultrathin, seamless glass enclosure makes the display strong and durable. And because it’s power efficient and free of mercury and arsenic, this display is greener than ever. Ready for something even more brilliant? The 15-inch model is now available with a high-resolution 1680-by-1050 glossy or antiglare screen that gives you 36 percent more pixels."

So, I'll need to buy a hundred dollar adapter to get the laptop to work with my cinema display or a 30 dollar adapter for any other instance. The screens been updated, but I can't watch bluerays on it and I'm still paying over double the price when compared to a laptop with better specs.

Just an opinion... they end up being pretty expensive when you look at the alternatives.

Where can I buy a laptop that runs OSX (naively w/warranty support) for half price?

You can get one for as little as $8...
Amazon.com: Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Female Adapter Cable for Apple Macbook, Macbook Pro: CE Compass: Electronics

It may be just me, but I found it easier to have one port and use the adapter for the need I have instead of having a lot of different video outputs on the computer. I got a MiniDisplayport-to-HDMI at home when I wanna watch something on the TV screen that's playing on my computer.

If you find it to be so overpriced and lack functions, you know what? You don't have to buy it
