My iPhoto has one foot in the grave

I think I had about 5,000 pics in iPhoto and all was well. Then, I imported about 3,000 more pics, at one time, from a SD card I had. After that, iPhoto has been very slow to open. Once it's open, it's so slow and sluggish that it's nearly impossible to use. What happened? Is it simply not designed to handle this many photos?

It'll handle 20,000+ photos with ease. Try rebuilding your library like so.

If you're dealing with really massive numbers of photos, like 50k+, Aperture is a better choice for photo management.

Just wanted to update this thread.

I did what Simba suggested and it solved the problem.
