Imagine only having to lug around a 0.7 kilo laptop with ~10 hours battery life instead of a 1.5 kilo laptop with about ~5 hours of battery life.

If not for students, it's also covers the people who only have a stationary computer at home and needs a portable unit to surf the web etc. around the house or when traveling.

Regarding why it's not got OS X running on it is probably because it would be a lot more difficult to use with all the types of menus, windows and smaller buttons. The iPhone OS which the iPad has continued to develop from is created to use with your hands and fingers. The OS X and Windows are created to control with a keyboard and/or mouse. That, inmo, is the main reason why it hasn't got OS X from the start, as it would be difficult to operate with only "touching".

Just my $0.02
You wont be able to write anything for an extended length of time without an external keyboard. .6 of a kg is hardly going to break your back. And why would you compromise with a device that can't do 1/4 of the things a proper laptop can? You wont be able to sit in class with it on the desk because the back is curved and to type on anything but your knees whilst lieing down will give you terrible posture.

OSX wouldn't be hard to operate with touching?? I use a tablet with a pen which is essentially like using my finger. And as thedude or someone said, adapt OSX for use on a mobile device. The iPhone software works on a phone because it's a toy.

They have severely handicapped iPad by not using OSX or a variation of it. They have created a device that doesn't really fit into any reasonably useful segment and have again not put fundamental stuff on it and are forcing you to buy adapters.

If people are so concerned about weight and not wanting to carry a laptop around ( which has negligible weight ) then this becomes an expensive internet device.

Hardly revolutionary.

There are serious, fundamental issues with the UI that would jeopardize the overall experience.

The iPhone OS is, by far, the best platform to work up from.

This isn't a full-fledged laptop replacement; never has been, never will be. Rather, it's a tool to leverage the Internet and similar apps in the most simplified way.

I'll expand later when I get home.
So your saying I should carry my laptop, a iPad and a iPhone with me around. Mainly because the iPad is going to give me the best web experience possible? I'm sorry, I just don't buy it... this thing has a half-ass'd identity at best. As a huge supporter of Apple products, it's my duty to scrutinize the sh*t out of this product... after all Steve Jobs says its Magical.

+1. Time will tell, but this may be a very useful device for mobile business needs.

If they do secure substantial textbook contracts, students may become interested as well. Not lugging around your books and consolidating them to one source would be nice.

I completely agree that the iPad was not made for the purpose of replacing laptops or phones, so I can see why it seems unnecessary, but I would also much rather spend the $500 on this than $489 on the Kindle DX from Amazon. It would be great to have around in addition to an iMac or Macbook just to carry around the house or throw in a bag to take for a day or two. I think it looks pretty cool, and Apple will definitely sell these, even if only for the reason that apple gurus will get them just because it's from apple.

The name iPad is a little pathetic though. I am excited to see one in person.
