Jesus, the thing hasn't even been out for 24 hours and everybody is already up in arms. Give it some time, I think its a great leisure device and it can only improve.
Apple isn't just gonna sell out with all this hype... You'll see everything your asking for in a couple months. Just like the iPhone when it first came out. Everybody was upset about no media texting, no video camera, no instant messaging, no apps etc... they had the capabilities but didn't sell out in the beginning. Give the iPad some time and you'll see a lot more come out of it.

Who's it aimed at? What segment?
Its not a laptop replacement. If it ran proper osx then maybe, and a proper keyboard, but it doesnt. And what would be the point, that would make it a laptop. Its essentially an expensive kindle and portable video player.
So do they expect people to pack this and a laptop? Laptops are slim enough and light enough to add negligible hassle to commuting.

If not for students, it's also covers the people who only have a stationary computer at home and needs a portable unit to surf the web etc. around the house or when traveling.
Regarding why it's not got OS X running on it is probably because it would be a lot more difficult to use with all the types of menus, windows and smaller buttons. The iPhone OS which the iPad has continued to develop from is created to use with your hands and fingers. The OS X and Windows are created to control with a keyboard and/or mouse. That, inmo, is the main reason why it hasn't got OS X from the start, as it would be difficult to operate with only "touching".
Just my $0.02

Looks like Apple will have a legal battle on its hands...Fujitsu currently holds the US rights to the name "ipad", a device that they developed a few years ago that is used in the retail sector...it is likely that Apple will have to buy the rights from Fujitsu

Wow. That's a considerable oversight on their part if true.
