Safari 4 Annoyances

Why on earth did they change out the awesome blue progress bar in the URL field and made some obscure little button to the right?

Why does it feel like Safari 4 loads sites quicker, but when you are actually browsing content-heavy sites it becomes slower and lags scrolling/typing etc. in a way Safari 3 never did?

I semi-regret this upgrade . . .

Official answer is "because".

There were some hacks to restore the blue progress bar, though, only in the beta release of Safari 4.

4 is quite a lot faster/better in all respects. You can run 3 and 4 at the same time, though it's a pretty involved process as the webkit and underlying frameworks are all quite a lot different.

Don't like that loading bar either. I used the Beta and it was possible to change it with a little app back then, so hopefully it will be possible to do it again.

The problem is Safari is trying to compete with web browsers, and failing at it horribly. A recent test from PC world shows that their claims of having the "fastest" browser were sincerely crushed by Google Chromes numbers.

I don't even understand WHY either, they don't nearly have to work on security issues as much as other web browsers were their main
user is a windows user.

I never stick to one company or one brand, I take the best and compile it into the best computer.

The Safari project has crap all to do with "competing" in the browser market. Microsoft EOL'd IE:mac, which effectively left Apple without a browser to ship with their OS. Firefox was not a viable option given that at the time it was (and in many ways still is) a horrible piece of crap, and the code licensing was not something they could work with. Apple had no alternative but to roll their own browser.

Moreover, Safari is considerably faster on a Mac. It was only rolled out in a windows flavor as iTunes needs the webkit underpinnings to work with the music store.

Thanks for the info. I tend to just notice the changes and roll with them... Maybe I should pay more attention?
