it is frustrating....
You either need to enable disk mode via iTunes, or your iPod has an incompatible format. E.g. Mac HFS format on a Doze box.

Simba, is this the same procedure if I have a new macbook and an old nano? I have music on the nano which is synced with an older laptop, i want to get the music onto the macbook now.

Connect the iPod to your computer and open iTunes. Click on the iPod in question in the "Devices" column. Click the summary tab on the right. Click "manually manage music" and "enable disk use". The iPod will then update and mount.

If you have a windows formatted iPod, it should work fine on a Mac. The reverse is not true. Worst case, backup your music on a windows box, and then restore (reformat) the iPod on your Mac.

It's the same for virtually every iPod. The only exception is the iPhone, which can be a bit more involved to access as a disk device.

The terminal option on a Mac will always work.

it is pretty late... (3 weeks to be exact) but
thanks so much simba.
im learning a lot about mac thanks to mac gurus like you.

btw
it turned out that 2nd gen touch cannot be used as the disk itself other than the ipod.
so i had to use some app named senuti to take music off to my hdd.

Potentially. Anything iPod uses the same directory structure, though the phone file systems are considerably more locked down.
