Recovering data from deleted user?

A I posted in OT, I brilliantly deleted the admin user on my ex wife's macbook and all the files connected with it..did not save or archive the user and all files are gone.

Any idea best way to try to recover data?

I would call the Apple store and ask one of the guys at the Genius Bar.... I've worked with data recovery places in the past, it was very expensive, and they gave us a hard drive back with files that had no extensions... Useless.

Hey Hero, you should be shifting the blame before you try to solve the problem. That way, when you fix it, you WILL be the hero, and not the bad guy that wiped her hard drive. So, first step is to chastise her for failing to make back up discs and for failing to regularly back up her data. THEN listen to whatever Tractor's advice is, because I've got nothing.

This is EX wife. Not current wife or ex fiancee or whatever.

I just hid in the living room to play with the dog. Then left after I broke the lamp. oops.

She is emailing me when she can drop off the laptop to 'fix' it. I said "fix it how"

She shoulda made a backup. Don't blame me! yeah

Yeah, don't blame me!!! And yup, I know it's your ex wife, not ex fiance. But "current wife"??? I missed that little status change!!!

Yup, as long as SHE'S the one to blame for failing to make backups!!! Not you for purposefully (ooops, I mean accidentally, you know I do) wiping all her files!!!

Look in the /Users/ folder on the hard drive. Should be a "Deleted Users" folder with a DMG for the deleted user containing the user's home directory. Double click it, mount the image, and dump the files wherever you want.

(Yes, they thought of that.)

Simba, so what is the right way to securely delete data? Does the secure trash feature really work?
