Secure trash works well enough for most people. If you're really paranoid you can do a secure trash, followed by a multi-pass "erase free space" in disk utility, which will do up to 35 write-over-zero passes on what used to be your data.

That's probably more effective than a .50.

Though the .50 is certainly a nice way to be sure. Even then, that's not guaranteeing anything. Data was, after all, recovered from a hard drive that fell to earth in the Columbia disaster to the tune of 90% of its data.

So if data can survive that kind of situation, well, you're going to have to really go out of your way to make sure nothing can be recoverd.

And if you somehow managed to delete them where the .dmg file isn't available, mail the thing to me and I'll recover the files for you.
