I guess others are speculating too. Some pretty cool ideas in here. I hope Apple is inspired by these. Apple iPhoneys: The 4G edition - Network World Besides, doesn't iPhone's contract with AT&T end soon?

Sprint is advertising a 4G network as "coming soon". I dunno the details.

Sprint may be talking about upgrading their 4G network but it won't be commercially available for some time (12 months)

There's some pretty firm speculation that iTunes will be refreshed on 1 June and there's a very good chance that there will be a new iPhone announced at WWDC on 8 June with stock to follow within a couple of weeks.

Sprint will end up going bankrupt or being bought before their 4g network becomes commercially available on a network wide base. Every other major carrier has adopted the same 4g standard (LTE), while Sprint still thinks it can go about using its own. The company is bleeding money and customers, and the Nextel acquisition was an absolute disaster.

The new iPhone will mostly be a software upgrade. Minor hardware updates (camera, compass, etc) are expected. I believe the current 3g iPhone is already capable of using AT&Ts upgraded 7.2mb/s network (although I may be wrong).

I concur with all that you've said. Data speed is an awfully subjective discussion. In Australia, Telstra have been blowing their trumpet about data speeds over the last few years with their latest number at 14mbps. The reality is that most people with top end hardware are achieving downloads at 2-3mbps. I believe the current iPhone is capable of achieving downloads at speeds within this range so all consumers should be happy.

That's the thing about handheld technology...

everyone's got something coming but it's about "now" and the device that works with all of your existing tech
