Adding an email address to Mail

Im still pretty new to using Mail on the mac. I am trying to add an email address and having a problem.

I enter the email address and password. For mail server I am using mail.sitename.com

Can't understand why this isn't working...I am choosing POP...the account is hosted by network solutions who hosts my domain..

Any clues?

What isn't working, incoming or outgoing?

Common things to check: SSL enabled/disabled, mail host correct, mailbox prefix correct, etc.

should the incoming server name be "mail.domainname.com"?

I am assuming it is a POP account.

I am such a rookie

There are not many things I can be doing wrong...username and password are correct..

There's never, ever any need to reinstall a core application. Just trash the preferences if you want to start from a blank slate.

The mail server depends on your host's configuration. Generally it's mail.domain.com on whatever port is applicable for their system, however some hosts do things differently. It'd be best to ask them for the account info and go from there.

Check out :

That's for backing up mail messages/preferences, but it should work in your case.

The prefs are in your home directory.

/Users/you/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Also com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist
