Anyone have an old MacBook for sale or donation?
Hey guys
I recently decided to help my friend's daughter's boyfriend...I never met him but my friend tell me he is a great kid from a poor family with no money, etc. and did I have any old computers for him to use in school..I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Well, I have so much crap around here I figured I could find something..So I promised the kid an old iBook..I have two of them that were my kids..First one DOA...no power, probably bad logic board..
Next one was working..so I brought the computer to their house on Thanksgiving and while there, reformatted it and started to prepare it for the kids boyfriend..Lo and behold the iBook kept freezing up..Took it home and it worked perfectly..
Reinstalled the system software and all seemed fine..But as I was downloaded iTunes, it froze up again..
I gave up and brought it to a local repair shop who tells me he believes it's the logic board or possibly a problem connected to the fan not working properly and when the computer gets hot, it locks up.
I have about 8 hours invested in this goddamned thing, not to mention $50 for diagnosis at the least..
But I gave my word to get the kid a laptop and I have to follow thru.
Does anyone have any experience with problems like this? Would an intermittent fan create this problem? I have a feeling this is just going to be one of those lingering problems if you know what i mean..
Anyone have an old ibook for parts or something very cheap for me to buy the kid..
SOmetimes ya just can't win..

I just want to post here to tell you what amazing members we have..A well known and loved member offered to split the cost of a new computer to get for this kid with him!
While the offer is incredibly generous, if anything it shamed me to be complaining about following through with my commitment to getting one to give.
I can't fully express enough how great a gesture that was just now..I've been a bit down these days and it cheered me up quickly..
I can't accept the offer though as this is something I promised and can afford on my own..
Thanks again and I don't want to embarrass anyone by posting their name (Russ, Mexico Blue!)
Mark
PS: Still hoping someone has an old not used Mac laptop around...this whole thing may not be necessary as hopefully it really is just a matter of replacing the fan...(doubt it though...)
