Test Drive Today: Porsche 991 Base Model v 997s
#12
Part Two
Now that I've embraced the idea that I am going to give up the comfort and ease of an SUV or a sedan, clearly there are few if any choices other than a Porsche. Be it a newer or new Boxster S or Cayman or 911.
As the Boxster is feeling a little claustrophobic, the 911 makes best sense but which one?
Since I've never owned a 997, the search starts there. I've read a few reviews of the 991 and my excitement started to wane. There were talks of the 991 being too 'light' in the feel or too 'Lexus like' in comparison to other 911's. One well written review from a die hard 911 owner really started to convince me that while certainly the 991 is exciting looking and all it just might be too sterile, clean and easy and not give the gratification an earlier 911 can.
That made perfect sense to me actually, as I have experienced that very dynamic more than once in the past. For that reason I have always kept a couple of older 911's in the fleet as they do give you more gratification and pure visceral fun than a 964 on up.
As the idea started to gel of a 911 as a daily driver, the choice right away was to consider a 997 and wait for the 991 to come out and eventually to maybe get it as prices come down.
But not having even driven a 997, it made sense to compare them as the 991's are finally available.
With this in mind, I headed over to Paul Miller Porsche and Nick Milos who has always been an easy, honest and all around great salesman..As I was driving there I was on the phone with a friend and hardcore car guy and I started to say, "Look, there is no way, I am going to skip having owned a 997 and go right to a 991." But i stopped myself in time, internally edited that to add the word 'probably'..
I have intentionally steered clear of Nick and Paul Miller Porsche as like any other recovering addict or alcoholic, you might love your bartender as a person but it's best to see him or her not in a bar if you know what I mean.
And as much as I like Nick, he is offering crack cocaine in my eyes and unless I'm wanting to go back into rehab, it's better if I steer clear!
Nick recognises me instantly and I quickly tell him of my idea and maybe plan to get a 997s for daily use and then maybe get a 991 later on.
Nick reflexively and automatically says, "Look take any 997s and compare it to a base model 991 and I guarantee you it will make no sense to get the 997 as the 991 is just simply better" (excuse the long paraphase).
I practically interrupt him and shut him down..."Nick, I knew you would say that. Of course you are going to say that and I know you are probably right but let me drive both and see for myself.
Nick smiles as he knows he has me and grabs some keys and off we go to the parking lot to find the 991 he has decided I should drive first.
