Electric steering in 991 - any concerns?
For me, steering feel in 911s (and Boxsters and Caymans) is as important as the boxer engine. But 991 has switched to electric-assistance. Most cars I've driven with electric steering are rubbish and I worry about 991. Anyone else have similar concerns?
A mate is an auto journalist and he went to 991 reveal at the museum last week. He was impressed with exterior styling but thinks interior is too Panamera-inspired.
I don't know if he got a drive (he wouldn't tell me) but he mentioned he knew a Porsche outsider who has driven 991 and that this guy was unconvinced by the steering feel. Said it required a few degrees of lock before there was any real feedback.
My mate had a robust chat with 911 program boss August Achleitner who claimed you can't tell difference in systems. But Achleitner admitted switch was made to save 0.1L of fuel every 100km. There's even a rumour that GT cars will retain hydraulic steering, which is an admission of sorts in my eyes.
Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but Carrera S PDK Nurburgring time is 7:40.
