wtf is with the pipes here? why do the inside pipe on each side have a resonator looking thing?

Take a close look. It appears the PSE setup has one exhaust tip (per side) coming directly out of the side muffler and another tip being fed from the center muffler/x-pipe. Apparently the exhaust tips aren't all 'fed' from the same source mufflers.
