This thread almost makes me want to find a 4-speed 930 on principle alone...

Why would 7 bother anyone? Weight? Ok, I can buy that but I'm sure overall the car will be lighter anyway. Somebody posted about missed shifts? Really? You think Porsche engineering can't fathom a way to make it easy to shift correctly? I mean, really? Just like Carrera said you guys should applaud Porsche.

I love manuals - I'd never think of selling my 911 if I had a manual in it. Of course, I was cajoled into "trying" PDK. Not a fan (even if it does what's advertised on the tin very well).

It's just that transmissions are getting a bit silly - eight-speed autos, seven-speed manuals... A well-spaced six-speed does just fine for providing performance and economy.

my car would *love* a 7-speed - it would probably be significantly faster since gearing it properly for gears 1-5 leaves a very tall 6. (of course, i'm getting old & i rarely drive deep into 4th gear, much less 5th & 6th.)

I don't know why anyone would poo poo this. You're only ever going to use it on the freeway.

HBspeed is an unknown quantity at this point
I also applaud Porsche for this move. It shows a drive for innovation, or at minimum the desire for it. When others would abandon, Porsche perseveres.

Those putting Porsche down for this move are either automatic drivers (sry this includes PDK) or those who will be jealous of the 991 because their Porsche is only a 6 speed. Every contrarian argument made here could also apply to the transition from 5 speed to 6 speed or 4 speed to 5 speed etc.

These are the same people who will welcome the day when cars have non-defeatable camera's on the front bumper that determine the angle, camber, slope, etc. of the road ahead and modify the steering input for you. They will subsequently claim Porsche has again made a superior drivers car because the vehicle now more efficiently and rapidly navigates the road, just like PDK does.

Wow, that's some kind of broad generalization... So because I have a 997 PDK, I'm jealous?? Or because I have a PDK car, I'll welcome some self-driving bullshit? I think not.

Like I said, it's getting to a level of silliness. There always will be a point of diminishing returns. A seven-speed manual gearbox is that point. Think about it - if most people drive between 0-100 MPH (and even that's a stretch), then a well-spaced 6-speed is PLENTY. Make 6th a really tall overdrive gear, with 1-5 spread at 35mph increments. Still more than enough to get a car moving VERY quickly. Obviously I'm making a simple example, but the point is the same.

Plenty of PDK owners out there bought PDK cars because they are FASTER on the track. You're going to tell me they also want a self-driving car? Come on, man.

As far as the 991 goes, the more I read the less I'm interested. Think that's silly? I thought the same thing when I heard the specs on the 996....
