Play DVD Music in PCM 3.0 via iTunes
Had been struggling with pricey and buggy aftermarket ipod options, especially for PCM 3.0.
Tried this, works great on 997.2 with PCM 3.0. Got a little over 1100 songs on one DVD.
Gives the song name and/or artist on the screen too (I think depending on how you have it managed in your library).
Open iTunes
Insert Disc
Highlight the Playlist you wish to burn *
Select FILE >> LIBRARY >> BURN PLAYLIST TO DISC
Select DATA DVD (your options are CD Quality, mp3, Data DVD)
Select Burn.
*So, all of the music you wish to add must be on one playlist. I tried highlighting multiple playlist, didn't work. So you'll need to add all of the songs you wish onto one.
Once you've got this down you can do it quicker by highlighting the playlist and select BURN DISC on the bottom right of iTunes. It will tell you to insert a disc if you havn't already and default to the previous burn settings (presumably DATA DVD).
iTunes will tell you if you have too many songs on as well. I had about 4.6GB worth of music on a 4.7GB disc and it said "too many", presumably to allow enough space for some data registry, etc.
FYI.

I hoped to get my iPod interfaced but I hear the PCM3.0 has issues with many of the aftermarket ipod adapters (i.e. Denison, etc.)
In lieu of time and expense of getting the OEM ipod done, I did this. Seems to work well.
I'm not sure in PCM's prior to 3.0 could play DVD's as music/ data.

Just speculating from what I've heard from others here and other forums that one of the big differences between PCM 2.1 vs 3.0 is the ability to play DVD's as a storage medium for music.
It sounds like 2.1 cannot read DVD's. I cannot speak for sure since I do not have 2.1 but I have burned several music DVD's in 3.0 and it works nicely.
