McLaren vs Ferrari
#21
The 458 is good, but the Mclaren wins on all fronts for me.
Performance, engine, interior, looks, etc.
The only place the ferrari wins is a slight edge on sound.
It's weird, because when I first saw the Mclaren, I felt the look was not exciting enough, but the more I see it, the more I love it.
The ferrari has the opposite effect... I loved it at first, but now the more I see it, the less it does for me.
I see a Mclaren on the street, and I think 90% chance the owner is a proper car enthusiast... I see a Ferrari and think 50% chance its some non-carguy trying to look rich.

I prefer the looks of the 458, but when you see the MP4 GT3, the aesthetics tip back in the Macca's favour. In terms of dynamics and performance - the Macca has it every day.
Macca will almost always have a proper car guy at the wheel. The Ferrari is a badge to too many, which is a great shame as it's a superb car. I'd wait for the GT3 influenced road car, which is why I've registered my interest in such a car with my local dealer.
It's great that both exist though - good for us and good for the industry.

There are many reasons for going for either of these cars. The Ferrari has less power and is often said to be worse in the bends. However, it does have the Ferrari badge, a badge that stands for heritage and performance. Along comes the McLaren with a smaller pricetag, more power and, if we are to believe TopGear magazine and most of the others, better handling. I agree with TheRoadWarrior, and am not going to repeat what he said.
I would go for the McLaren hands down, and never question my decision. Not that the decision will fall as I have nowhere near the money, nor a driving license or the age to possess one.
I wait with little patience to see what McLaren has in stall for us next.

One complaint I did read from multiple reviews though is the flappy-paddle system, it is based on the gear box from the McLaren Formula 1 cars and it is apparently a rather confusing system to operate.
Nevertheless, I stand by what I said earlier, IMO, the McLaren wins on all fronts, even the pedigree, because this car comes from the company that made the McLaren F1 and a bunch of serious competitors in Formula 1. For all those that dislike the looks of the MP4-12C, it confuses me, I like the simple style and I must say that the front reminds me a bit of the 430.

I've been told that the production of the Mclaren is in delay due to the japanese earthquake, the supplier for the head unit/screen is brought from Japan.
On the contrary, I've put my name down for a test drive in September.

Full test, 5 drivers, 5 days, 6 cars, 1000 miles and a track. (quite a mixture of cars)
MP4 12C
458 Italia
Merc SLS
911 Turbo S
Ford GT
Noble M600
To cut 35 page report to the final decision. Overall - Best car 458. Also scoring 5 out of 5 - SLS, GT, Noble, 4 out of 5 911 and MP4.
Standing start:
0-30 1st 911, 2nd MP4, 3rd 458
0-60 1st MP4, 2nd 911, 3rd 458
0-100 1st MP4, 2nd joint 911 and 458
Track Times - Now here is the shock!!! - Bedford Autodrome.
1st 458 - 1.19.3
2nd MP4 - 1.20.6
MP4 support team then fitted corsa tyres - still second - 1.19.6
McLaren sent full complement of engineers for the track test - more than Ferrari did according to the article.
MP4 weight as tested with Carbon brakes (IRIS not functional) - 1433 kg
458 weight as tested - 1469kg
General comment, no tester chose MP4 as favourite, MP4 great to drive at 5/10th's with perfect ride and muted sound and also great at 10/10 th's with all it's technology, but most importantly not rewarding between these ranges where most of the time these cars will be driven for spirited road driving. Brakes slated (carbon), seems similar to Merc SLR, all or nothing with no feel. Seems that at normal fast road speeds the car doesn't manage to respond to the road surface - 'suddenly feels all at sea, with only moderate loadings to deal with, the strange Citroen like ride reactions are back and the chassis feels out of tune with road' - perhaps more fine tuning needed.
