My ex 996TT backfired and shot flames out but I guess FVD tuned it a little rich, and I ran no cats sooo!
CS is god, but that for some reason isn't doing it for me :/

Not necessarily. Its more the lack of cats that causes the flames. Unburned fuel is released into the crazy hot exhaust when the throttle is closed. This fuel ignites in the exhaust and shoots flames.
