What Happens When a Skoda Wagon Takes On Classic Sports Cars?

Technology advances quite rapidly. We now have automatic transmissions that are better than a visit to the dentist, launch control to shave precious 10ths off 0-60 times, and adjustable suspension that allows us to go from track ready to grandpa-friendly in the push of a button. Does that mean that sports car from yesteryear are rendered obsolete? Well, Skoda has decided to put up a challenge to some classics via their new sport wagon.

The lineup is quite a list of who’s-who in the classic high performance sports car market: Lotus Esprit, Ferrari 308, Porsche 911, and Honda NSX. While all impressive, one has to remember that the Skoda Superb 280 is essentially a second-cousin to the delightful Golf R. All-wheel drive and a 275 hp turbo four cylinder means you can outrun these classics. The fact that a Czech station wagon can outrun the finest from Italy, Japan, and Germany is humbling enough, but will a Skoda Superb owner ever know the joys of having an outrageous service cost, or the joy you get when your car actually starts on the first try? My, how times have changed.
