McGowan Porsche Book

According to Robert McGowan, you don’t have to be rich to own a Porsche – buy the right one and it’s ‘practically free.’

Robert McGowan saw his first Porsche at the age of 12. A 1986 Guards Red Targa, it started a lifelong fascination with Porsches. He bought his first Porsche, a 1986 Guards Red Targa Sport, selling it three years later for the same price. Since then he’s owned a number of Porsches and written a book about the experiences – Porsche 911: The Practically Free Supercar.

The book is part Porsche history, part Porsche Buyer’s guide, and part “how to” guide for buying a “Practically Free” car. It’s a different book from other car books. Instead of a puff piece with history and photos, McGowan shares his knowledge about Porsches and how to buy them. It’s been reviewed by all the major Porsche sites and clubs, including the PCA and Rennlist which interviewed McGowan in 2018.

According to McGowan, if you want a convertible you can’t beat the Boxster. They are real Porsches and offer a beautifully balanced driving experience. The Boxster is still reasonably inexpensive and you can get plenty of enjoyment out of one. It’s also a great entry-level choice or first purchase. Even the non-S models offer good performance and are more accessible in everyday driving.

The 996 series is a good entry point if you want a 911. But it’s important it passes a thorough inspection from a knowledgeable Porsche mechanic. The 996 is still the most affordable 911 but prices are starting to increase. Like the Boxter, you don’t need the S model or Turbo. The base 996 offers accessible performance and is a blast to drive.

The biggest takeaway from McGowan’s is that you don’t have to be wealthy to own a Porsche. If you buy the right one it can be practically free. Find a car that holds its value and buy the best example you can afford. This advice doesn’t apply to buying a vehicle as an investment. It’s about getting a car you can use and enjoy. Anyone who can afford a good used vehicle can choose to own and drive a Porsche. And it can be cheaper than making lease payments on a Toyota Camry.
