McLaren, Huracan, GT2 RS are Part of Epic 12-Car Drag Race
A dozen cars from Motor Trend‘s ‘Best Driver’s Car’ competition face off on the runway of Vandenberg Air Force Base.
If you were to take the world’s top performing drivers cars, twelve of them, and line them up side by side on an air strip for a race, what would you call it? You’d call it the World’s Greatest Drag Race, obviously. Motor Trend did just that at the Vandenberg Air Force Base, utilizing their 15,000 foot runway as the stage, and today’s hot exotics and sports cars for the race.
Host Jonny Lieberman put things into perspective with a quick tour of the Air Force base, showing the power contained in the Delta 4 rockets compared to the lowly piston powered cars. How does 2.2 million pounds of thrust sound? Take that, Lamborghini. Still, the cars were the real stars here, because not many of us are in the market for rockets.
At the sharp end of performance, three cars really stood out. Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS, McLaren’s 720S and Lamborghini’s Huracan Performante. Lieberman chose to be in the GT2 RS, and fellow co-host Jethro Bovingdon chose the 720S. Fitting, as he’s a Brit, after all.
Bovingdon picked the right car for the job, too, exclaiming “first ever World’s Greatest Drag Race, and I won it!” Although it was Lieberman who spilled the beans that it was the McLaren, rather than Bovingdon who did all he work to snatch the victory. “It pains me to say that Jethro won, so I won’t,” says Lieberman. “The McLaren 720S did all the winning. Good job Woking.”
Not far behind is Porsche’s GT2 RS. Lieberman couldn’t quite put all the power down at launch, but still managed to reel in the Huracan towards the end of the race. Although the Huracan is in the lead at 60 miles per hour, Lieberman says, “the Porsche is still in the mix, too. To 60, it is just 1/100 of a second behind the Performante. At 100 miles per hour, it sneaks ahead.”
Interestingly, the Corvette wasn’t far behind the McLaren’s 10.1 second 1/4 mile time at 10.8. And if you noticed a Dodge Scat Pack Challenger in there, too, you might be wondering why they chose that as opposed to a Challenger Hellcat Redeye. Don’t worry, MotorTrend was thinking well ahead on that one, because after trimming down the field to the 720S, GT2 RS, Huracan and ZR1, they threw the Redeye in there as a mean right hook for a 1/2-mile drag race.
